ECEC in Sweden
Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services have an important role - a cornerstone for a sustainable society with many dimensions - both in Sweden and globally. It’s about knowledge and education, health and living conditions, integration, reduced exclusion, demographics, gender, family life and career, while it is also a facilitator for economic growth. The Swedish education system starts with the preschool as the first step even though the preschool is not compulsory.
The ECEC service in Sweden is a uniform system and the children are integrated from one to six years old.
2015: 84 % of all children 1-5 years in Sweden with Swedish origin are enrolled in the preschool system.
2015: 78 % of all children 1-5 years in Sweden with a foreign origin are enrolled in the preschool system.
Since July 1st 2011, preschool activity is a separate school form, and is included in the school system as the first step in the child’s education. Preschool activity should stimulate the child’s development and learning, and offer the child secure care. The activities should be designed so that care, development and learning create a unified whole.
